Golf Club Numbers – What are they meant for?

Woods and Iron clubs are marked by numbers which are indicative as well as suggestive of how the club will work in terms of providing the loft as well as the distance. Lower irons and woods keep a flatter trajectory and make the ball travel cover more distance. This can also be called a classification of the kind of equipment needed to hit the ball to different horizons.

Irons and Woods alone having numbered classification means that we may have to leave out the other Putters and Wedges that do not have numbered classifications, but in case of a pitching wedge, you may identify them by the “P” etched on them. Let us look into the different types of woods and irons that are classified by numbers and the corresponding function of the numbers.

Irons

The tough and the best of golfers as well as the golfers who believe in true, traditional golfing and characteristically tougher golfers seek the lowest of irons. Due to their smaller heads, they have a very small face which can lead to slicing very often. Lower irons have grooves on their faces and they are the longest of the clubs.

Hardcore Golfers use golf clubs between the numbers 1 and 4, in order to gain maximum distance in the first shot. They give low loft to the balls than the higher numbered irons. Middle range irons are numbered between five and seven and they have a higher loft than the lower irons. The eventual distance the ball can reach, when hit by lower irons, will be confined to the 150 yard range.

Higher irons are easy to use unlike the lower irons. The numbers 8 and 9 indicate a lower iron. They have the ability to give you a huge loft along with a distance of about 120 yards. They are preferred by amateur golfers the most due to their not so lengthier shafts that can bring more accuracy into the shot.

You do not have to slice very often and can hit your desired distance without failing most of the times.

Woods

Woods are meant for really long distances and can go around 350 yards the maximum. The one number of the woods does not have a high loft, perhaps the lowest and can hit the ball the maximum distance. This club is called as the driver. Following the drivers, the fairway woods can give high loft to the ball and relatively lesser distance. They are labeled between the numbers 1 and 5.
