A few jargons before Golf – Part 4
Three Ball
Three ball games are played between three players with their respective balls.
Three-quarter shot
A three-quarter of a full swing.
Tight Fairway
A fairway which is very narrow.
Top Shot
A kind of hitting on top of the ball which makes to roll and bounce and doesn’t help the ball rise.
Tree shot
A ball hitting a tree that results in a penalty by running into the hazards.
Trajectory
The traveling of the ball in the air and the path that it travels.
Turkey
Hitting three birdies in a game of 18 holes.
Up and Down
Getting the ball to the green by hitting “up” with a Pitch, and getting the ball “down” into the hole by a putt. Hence, the name Up and Down.
Unplayable & Unplayable lie
A helpline with a penalty of one stroke where you can drop the ball near the hole the length of two clubs away and play from there. If you are in a hazard, you can drop it only within the hazard, the length of two clubs from the spot.
An unplayable lie is a spot where the ball lands from where it is unplayable due to the density of the trees.
Uncock
A straight swing of the wrists during a downswing.
Underclubbing
When you play with a club that gives a short distance than the usual club that you play with.
Water Hazard
Hitting straight into the water from where you can take a penalty or play on the water, if possible.
Wedge
A golf club made with sand wedge or a pitching wedge which gives a higher loft than iron.
Whiff
The player misses out on hitting the ball after a swing and he incurs this as one more stroke.
Whippy
A shaft with a higher amount of flexibility.
Woods
A club with a big head which was made of wood in the past and now made with metal. Woods can take the ball to longer distances than other clubs.
Yips
A dangerous proposition of the twitch that happens while putting. Many of the best players find it dangerous which can even ruin their careers.
There is always an information overload when it comes to Golf and a compilation of the terms used in Golf seems never ending. This game has got a history of more than a hundred years at least and hence, more and more terms have evolved over time. Learning the words related to a sport or profession will help us in a lot of ways in playing and getting better at the phenomenon!
